Campaign Briefs for - "The Chinese Dragon " Nov 2002
INTRODUCTION
After defeating Mao's communist forces you have unified China under one banner through the newly formed Peoples Council. As a successful rising general you have been placed at the head of China's military forces as a reward for driving the Japanese out of China proper. It is your belief that only with a strong naval arm can China achieve her rightful place as a world power. Despite heated debates and serious doubts within the higher echelons of power your plans for a naval arm have been approved. Close ties with the United States both militarily and economically have allowed China to purchase warships and material from the US. With Japanese expansion in the Pacific US economic and military aid has been stepped up allowing China access to many types of advanced hardware. For centuries China has been the victim of foreign aggression and much of its land is still held by foreign powers. The time has come to regain all Chinese territory and exert China's rightful influence in the region. You have set China on a course of regional domination in Asia. In order to control the Asian mainland you will need to deal with the Japanese, the Vichy French in Indo-China, Mongolia, and the British in Burma. Germany's invasion of Poland has set the world aflame and the time has come to take military action where diplomacy has failed in order to achieve your objectives.

1) Macau - Chiang Ki-shek's forces have driven the Japanese from the China mainland. However, three years of fighting with Mao's communist forces and his corrupt regime have brought him down. Your leadership and call for national unity has accomplished what no Chinese leader has done in thousands of years... reunited the Chinese people under one banner. The time has come to reclaim all Chinese territory from foreigner powers. Your first task will be to reclaim Macau from Portugal. They have refused to hand over this sovereign Chinese territory peacefully so it has become necessary to take it back by military means. Military leaders mocked your vision of a Chinese naval fleet. You will now have the opportunity to prove them wrong. Be warned - do not squander your assets General, as they are not easily replaced.

Challenge Level - Difficult - Limited Time

2) Hong Kong - Your extraordinary efforts and success have caught the world off guard and the remaining Portuguese forces have laid down their arms. Macau once again is part of China! The British however are determined to hold Hong Kong and there are reports that a sizeable fleet has put to sea to secure the area. Seizing Hong Kong would be a major blow to British aspirations in Asia and serve as a springboard to retake the remaining Chinese territories occupied by foreign powers. Your forces are not as experienced or as well armed as the British so you will need to use your forces wisely. Do not go head to head with the British fleet or air force. It is much wiser to isolate the enemy piece by piece. You cannot afford to lose precious air or naval units General, as they are irreplaceable!
Map - Newly designed
Challenge Level - Difficult - British Sea and Air Units are superior to yours. Ambush works well here. Do not lose any core air or sea units! **Tsing Yi Town is not required to be captured in order to get a Decisive Victory in the scenario despite it being an objective. Hong Kong and Kowloon are your main objectives. Use everything at your disposal to win this scenario.

3) Haiphong - Your incredible victory at Hong Kong has erased centuries of shame upon the Chinese people. Once again we are united with our brothers. The yoke of foreign oppression grows smaller but remains to our south. The German invasion and subsequent defeat of France has left Indo-China under Vichy French control. The Vichy government is determined to hold the area for the sake of French pride in the wake of its defeat in Europe. Our open alignment with the United States and denunciation of Nazi Germany has gotten Hitler's notice however. Germany is sending units to reinforce Indo-China on behalf of the Vichy French. Therefore we must strike immediately at Haiphong before they arrive in order to secure the coast and prevent further reinforcements via sea routes. If we can take Haiphong by July 1940 we can proceed on Hanoi with minimal German influence. Due to the difficult terrain you can expect this task to be difficult and you must execute the battle with extreme speed and prejudice. Good luck Commander....

Challenge Level - Difficult- You will need to cross several bridges, which are easily defended by enemy forces. Due to the time limits you will need to cross these bridges quickly in order to get a DV.

4) Hanoi - With the fall of Haiphong we have secured the coast of Indo-China and have cut off Vichy troops from further reinforcements from sea routes. In order to effect the surrender of the Vichy government we must seize Hanoi. While you have demonstrated unmatched military prowess you can expect this to be more difficult than your campaign in Haiphong as German units were able to reach the area before Haiphong fell. It is not clear what type of units you may face General but you can be sure of one thing - they are well-trained professionals and should not be taken lightly. We are mustering additional units to assist in this vital drive to liberate Indo-China.
Map - Newly designed
Challenge Level - Difficult - As with Haiphong you will need to cross several bridges. You will need to move quickly and make bold attacks to win here.

5) Ulan Bator - You have earned all the honors now being bestowed upon you General. Indo-China is now under China's influence and the Chinese people are clamoring for a greater China in Asia. The Peoples Council has been considering an attack on Burma to rid the area of British control. However, as you have pointed out, such an attack could place our alliance with the United States in jeopardy. We are for the time being dependent on US military hardware and economic aid. With the Germans sweeping across the vast Russian countryside Stalin is occupied in the west and we have used the opportunity to push into Outer Mongolia and are now proceeding on to Ulan Bator - the capital. Since the USSR has set up a communist puppet government in Mongolia we expect Soviet units in the area and resistance to be stiff. You are to take command of Chinese forces and secure our Northern frontier from Soviet influence. The enemy has destroyed most bridges into Ulan Bator but the rivers at Ulan Bator are shallow at several points and may be easily crossed so you will need to find these points in order to approach the capital.

Challenge Level - Moderate to Difficult. There are several places to cross the rivers with no bridges. If you see to "beach" tiles across from each other you can cross there.

6) Makung - Superb work at Ulan Bator General! Thanks to you we now have our Northern Frontier secure from Soviet influence. The Japanese still control the Korean peninsula and have seized Vladisvostok - while it's imperative they be expelled from the mainland, a rare opportunity has presented itself and we must act on it now. The Japanese IJN Fleet Carrier Kaga has struck a mine off the southern coast of Formosa and has docked at Makung for emergency repairs due to heavy flooding. Makung lies off the western shores of Formosa and is comprised of several small islands. The Japanese have positioned ships, aircraft, and experienced ground units in the area to protect Kaga. This mission holds many risks but it is felt that this is an opportunity to destroy the Kaga and seize Makung as a stepping-stone for reclaiming Formosa as part China once again. Due to the on-going conflict between the US and Japan, the US government has agreed to provide us with updated military hardware. Choose your equipment wisely General - the primary threat lies from sea and air units.

Challenge Level - Difficult

7) Formosa - Because of your brilliance we have been able to hold Makung despite repeated Japanese counterattacks. With the loss of IJN Kaga Japan has been regrouping its fleet and consolidating its forces on the perimeter of their empire. We have started a small scale diversionary attack into Korea to tie up as many of their resources as possible as well as to keep them guessing about our real intentions. Because of the shallow waters at Makung we were able to raise Kaga and make full repairs General and she will be under your command for our invasion of Formosa. The Americans are landing on the Philippines, which has stretched Japanese forces even further. You of course have been given the honor to lead the attack. This will be much more difficult than your earlier victory at Makung. Expect heavy resistance and better-equipped Japanese land forces aided by a large fleet and air contingent. You must seize the capital of Taipei quickly before Japanese reinforcements can be brought in. Do not go head to head with their superior numbers at sea General.

Challenge Level - Moderate to Difficult

8) Burma/Rangoon - Formosa is finally ours! A commendable effort against difficult odds General. Now, the time has come to deal with the British forces in Burma. The losses suffered by Germany have allowed the British to significantly build up forces in the region. Negotiations with the British Crown for the removal of their forces in Burma have proven futile. We have tried repeatedly to assault and take Mandalay but have failed as the British forces there are dug in and well supplied via India on land and Australia from the sea. The decision has been made to launch a full-scale invasion to the south to secure Rangoon and its airfields allowing us to sever resupply from the sea and turn our full attention to Mandalay. Because of the airfields you can expect a high number of experienced British air units. It is imperative that you take air superiority quickly. Also be aware that British ships are in the area and will need to be destroyed in order for this attack to be successful. Good luck General.

Challenge Level - Difficult - Time Limitations make it imperative you move quickly.

9) Mandalay- Excellent work, General! The loss of Southern Burma has denied the British valuable airbases and with Rangoon now under our control we can interdict supplies to British forces coming from Australia and the Pacific. It is now time to liberate Mandalay. Our assaults from the east through the mountains have been thwarted by stiff British defenses. The Peoples Council has decided to proceed to Mandalay from the west. This will require moving your forces through very difficult jungle terrain and past determined British defenses. Capture Mandalay whatever the cost General and we can finally turn our attention to the Japanese forces located on the Korean peninsula. While your fleet will be of no use during this battle they will be refitted while you bring glory to China at Mandalay. Good luck General.

Challenge Level - Moderate to Difficult. Don't allow your units to get bogged down. Keep moving and this scenario is moderate only.

10) Korea - Brilliant General! Your capabilities are unparallel! The British have fallen back into India and we can now turn our attention to the Japanese occupation of Korea. For 40 years they have flaunted this occupied territory at us. It is now time to finally remove this scourge from the Asian mainland and let the world know its China who holds total influence in the region. You must move quickly before Japanese re-enforcements make the capture of Korea too costly. You have become a hero to the people of China. A victory here would assure your legendary status General!

DESIGN NOTES: - My primary goal with this campaign was to allow the player to use a minor country (in terms of PacGen that is) and make it into a major power. I also wanted to be able to fight various countries that are not normally used. From the start I wanted to make the campaign a challenge to veteran players so I hope I have achieved that. Newer players may become frustrated when playing as the scenarios can be difficult. This campaign requires combined arms tactics and the ability to think ahead. Don't bog down all your units in city fighting and keep some units moving forward and you can win all the scenarios with a Decisive Victory. Prestige is sparse throughout except towards the last two scenarios where you can upgrade more units. I used a good solid core of 3 fighters and 4 Tactical bombers almost from the start and found they were very much needed to win this campaign. Also very useful were the 3 core destroyers and 2 Heavy Cruisers. Air and Sea units are expensive so don't lose core units. Protect your core units... aux units are expendable. Enjoy!! Comments are welcome.
